In the growing effort to compete with ultra-low-cost carriers that include Spirit (SAVE - Get Report) and Frontier, American Airlines (AAL) rolled out a basic economy fare on March 1 and United (UAL - Get Report) will follow suit on April 18. Delta (DAL - Get Report) first offered the fare in 2013. The basic fare abandons many of the amenities associated with these legacy airlines including assigned seats and seat upgrades.
