As tax season gets underway, consumers should be on the lookout for tax refund theft.

According to Kevin Mitnick, author of The Art of Invisibility, hackers or identity thieves can retrieve your social security number and date of birth from a variety of online sources and file a fake tax return in your name.

The worst part? The hackers may also receive your tax refund. Mitnick said consumers then must prove to the IRS that the fake return was indeed fake.
