Hoping to keep its 'no vacancy' light off, Marriott (MAR - Get Report) opened a record number of rooms in 2016. Minus the 381,000 rooms it gained from its $13 billion September acquisition of Starwood Hotels, Marriott opened 55,000 this past year. The company now operates more than 6,000 hotels with nearly 1.2 million rooms in 90 countries. Marriott wasn't the only hotel company to benefit from an increase in travelers last year with Hilton Worldwide (HLT - Get Report) announcing that it increased its presence in 91 of the 104 countries where it does business.
