Celebrity restaurateur and Shake Shack (SHAK) creator Danny Meyer is championing the cause to abolish tipping. The custom is becoming a growing problem in the restaurant industry. Servers' tips have increased along with food prices over the last few years, but chefs and kitchen staff, by law, aren't able to share in the customer contributions. The slim margins most restaurants run on means the majority of server wages end up being paid by customers. Many have commented that the tip is no longer an indicator of good service but has morphed into an obligatory living wage for restaurant staff.
