Stocks started the trading day Wednesday slightly lower ahead of the FOMC minutes being released at 2 pm eastern. Before the bell, investors were greeted with a slew of economic reports including overall industrial production rising slightly in January, up 0.2%. The Producer Price Index fell 0.8%, the biggest drop on record and the third straight month of declines. Housing starts also fell in January with groundbreaking for single-family homes down 2% but the levels still point to an improving housing market. Caterpillar (CAT) is being investigated by U.S. authorities. The Dow component disclosed the probe regarding the movement of cash among its U.S. and foreign subsidiaries. Caterpillar said it is cooperating with the investigation.
