Google announced it's testing a new subscription service providing ad-free access to Web sites. In what it calls 'an experiment in additional ways to fund the Web' that will let users directly support the people who create Web sites they use, the company said through Contributor by Google, users can pay $1 to $3 a month to access participating Web sites without advertising. Partners joining Google in the experiment include The Onion, WikiHow and Mashable. Instead of AdSense advertising on those sites, a gray box with a thank-you message from the Web site appears. For now, the service is invitation-only, but users interested in being Contributors can sign up for the wait list.
