Investors need to protect themselves from con-artists and ponzi schemers that may even be family members or close friends, said Tom Ajamie, author 'Financial Serial Killers'. Ajamie said fraudsters continue to lurk in the markets and are continually planning ways to separate unwitting investors from their money. He said the cold-calling techniques used by the so-called 'Wolf of Wall Street' Jordan Belfort are still being used today. Ajamie added that the Bernie Madoff case proved that if investors cannot explain how their money is being put to work then they should not use that strategy, no matter how well-credentialed the financial adviser may be.
