In the Morning Market Stir for Friday, August 8, Alan Knuckman discusses Thursday’s trading in which the equity markets fell and bonds and gold showed continued strength. The indexes hit new relative lows but closed slightly off from the bottom of the day’s range. The S&P broke 1,900 but closed down 5.5 points to 1,905, the Dow was down 75 to 16,321, and the Nasdaq finished down 12 to 3,857. The dollar was firm at 81.61, with the Euro remaining weak at 133.60. The bond market moved up to 139’16 before closing at 139’08. Crude oil was up slightly to 97.35, and gold finished up 4 to 1,312.5. Overnight futures continued lower, but have since reversed this morning. Gold and treasures have reversed lower, moving opposite the equity indices.
