Brooklyn-based circuit board maker ReFactory is making a smart bet in smart circuit boards. By bringing world-class electronic design, prototyping and manufacturing to within easy reach of New York's growing design and engineering community, the company hopes it can compete with global electronics makers who currently make top-end electronics such as the Apple iPhone. ReFactory is gearing up to succeed thanks to having time and space on its side -- ReFactory offers faster turnarounds, transparent pricing and more intellectual property protection to start-ups. The road ahead will be difficult. ReFactory does face higher costs than overseas competitors. But since jobs that take six hours in Brooklyn take six weeks to come from Asia, founder Tom Kennedy is confident ReFactory can play an important role in the global supply chain.
