The group saw a "meaningful decline in performance" when the Verizon iPhone 4 was held in a "specific but quite natural way," in which a gap in the phone's external casing is covered.

Consumer Reports

is not including the Verizon iPhone 4 in its list of recommended smartphones for that reason.

Last year, many iPhone customers complained that they would lose reception when the device was held in a particular way. Known as Antennagate, the problem was a public relations disaster for Apple, and

the company was forced to hold a press conference to address the issue

Shares of Apple rose 1.3% in afternoon trading Friday to $347.19.
