The move confirms a story that was first reported in an

April 30 Tech Rumor item

. It also comes just two days in front of Palm's big Pre debut and four days --

or four weeks, for that matter

-- ahead of Apple's new iPhone debut.

The BlackBerry Flip will be available June 19, says Verizon. Still missing from RIM and Verizon is the hotly anticipated BlackBerry Niagara, now called Tour, which also is expected this month.

The release of the Flip at Verizon at least gives the No. 1 telco something shiny and new to peddle at a critical time. Rival

is sure to enjoy a lot of the limelight when the iPhone arrives. And

Sprint

will soon bask in the glow of its Palm Pre exclusivity before Verizon gets a whack at it in January.

RIM shares were recently up 60 cents to $81.08, and Verizon shares were down 10 cents to $29.49.
