Uber Digs Further Into Gig Economy With Jobs App - TheStreet

Uber (UBER) - Get Report  plans to launch the Uber Works app on Friday in Chicago.

An expansion of its ride-hailing business, which employs contractors, this app matches freelancers to temporary gigs in several industries.

After Chicago, the app will open to other cities and then worldwide.

The taxi giant said in a blog post:

We believe that finding work shouldn't have to be a job in itself. For positions as diverse as being a prep cook, warehouse worker, a commercial cleaner or event staff, Uber Works aims to make it easier to find and claim a shift.

People in Chicago looking for temp work will have to register on Uber Works, complete an I-9 form, and pass a skills-assessment test.

Uber, based in San Francisco, will also conduct a background check on each applicant.

The company's stock closed 2.5% higher at $29.72.
