caught a bid early Monday after saying its BlackBerry wireless communicator now boasts 3 million worldwide subscribers.

For its first quarter ending May 28, the Ontario technology shop reiterated expectations for subscriber additions of 560,000 to 590,000.

According to the company, BlackBerry subscribers went from about 2 million in November to 3 million now. They first crossed 1 million in February 2004.

"With over 50,000 retail points of presence, accelerated geographic expansion and the anticipated addition of 100 new carriers in 2005, we are scaling our operations for the 5 million and 10 million subscriber milestones," the company said in a release.

RIM's shares are down 17.5% this year, closing Friday at $67.94. In premarket trading Monday, the stock gained $1.11, or 1.6%, to $69.05. The stock has risen more than sevenfold over the last two years.
