named CEO Gary Forsee to the additional post of chairman.

Forsee will replace Tim Donahue, the former Nextel CEO who announced his plans to retire in October.

"As Sprint Nextel moves forward, we are pleased that Gary Forsee will now lead the board," said Irvine O. Hockaday, chairman of Sprint's nominating and corporate governance committee, and lead independent director. "Sprint Nextel has the assets, brands and strategic direction in place, and we are confident under Gary's leadership that the company's goals will be realized."

Forsee has served as president and CEO of the telecom giant since it was formed by the joining of Sprint and Nextel in August 2005. Prior to then, he had served as chairman and CEO of Sprint since 2003.
