said second-quarter earnings before items fell to 26 cents a share, topping analysts' expectations by 5 cents.

The set-top box maker posted bottom-line earnings of $39.2 million, or 25 cents a share, compared to $70.8 million, or 42 cents a share, a year earlier. Revenues fell 34% to $418.2 million.

The company said shipments of its digital Explorer set-top boxes rose to 865,000 in the quarter, compared with 267,000 a year ago and 855,000 in the first quarter.
