RIM Could Unveil New Tablet Next Week
WATERLOO, Ontario, Canada (
) --
Research In Motion
(RIMM)
, the maker of the BlackBerry smartphone, could unveil its new tablet computer next week at a developers' conference in San Francisco, the
Wall Street Journal
reports.
The tablet, dubbed the BlackPad, is scheduled for release in the fourth quarter, said people familiar with the company's plans, the
Journal
reports.
RIM's tablet computer will have a seven-inch touch screen, one or two built-in cameras, and will have Bluetooth and broadband connections. The device will only be able to connect to cellular networks through a BlackBerry, however, the people said.
RIM's tablet won't use the recently revamped BlackBerry 6 operating system but will use a new platform built by
QNX Software Systems
, the
Journal
reports. RIM bought QNX earlier this year.
The developers' conference takes place from Sept. 27-30.
