Oracle/Sun Deal Could Get EC Delay: Report

Oracle's

$7.4 billion acquisition of
Sun Microsystems
(JAVA)
could be delayed by the European Commission over concerns about Oracle's takeover of Sun's MySQL database,
Reuters
reports, citing sources.
Oracle's market-leading database software competes against the MYSQL database, an open-source product that is popular among Web-based companies.
The deadline for approval by the EC is Thursday. If the commission decides to delve further into the matter such a review could take as long as four months,

notes, citing commission rules.
Commission officials have yet to decide whether to conduct such an investigation, according to the sources,

reports.
The deal was
by the U.S. Justice Department without conditions.
Oracle and Sun declined to comment for

.
Sun saw its
worldwide share of the server systems market
fall a full percentage point in the second quarter to 10% because of uncertainty about its future, said analysts at technology research company IDC.
Sun last week recorded a $147 million loss while sales declined 31% in the April-June period.
