has agreed to extend a key provision of its 2002 antitrust settlement, the Department of Justice announced late Friday.

The software giant will continue for some years to license technical data needed by competing software developers to make their software work with Microsoft's Windows server operating system.

The department said it sought the extension because of Microsoft's "protracted delays" in making the data available. However, the department also said that the request for an extension is not a result of any belief that Microsoft has willfully violated the final judgment.
