Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
McAfee shares slipped 18 cents, or 0.8%, to $23.55, in recent trading.
The acquisition will add to the company's risk management and compliance capabilities and help McAfee customers satisfy regulatory requirements, said Ken Gonzalez, vice president of corporate development for McAfee, in a statement.
Preventsys' security risk management system automates security compliance, and consolidates vulnerability, configuration and threat data from multiple vendor tools into one system.
