Lucent Technologies( LU) was up 1.1% in preopen Instinet trading after the company posted second-quarter loss of $1.08 per share, down from a 23-cent profit a year ago. Excluding items, the loss was 37 cents per share vs. a gain of 16 cents a year ago.
The loss improved slightly from the first quarter's 39 cents.
The Street had expected the telecommunications equipment maker to lose 23 cents per share, but that included results from

Agere, an optical components maker, said its pro forma profit fell to $4 million and announced 2,000 job cuts.
