was down 7.1% in early trading after announcing it will cut its workforce by about 3,000 "as a result of the current business environment."

The optical-networking company said the reductions will be concentrated in its passive component-manufacturing operations in California and Ontario. The company also said it will continue hiring for "high-growth product areas."
