India Wants Companies' BlackBerry Data
NEW DELHI (TheStreet) -- The Indian government is talking to companies that use Research In Motion's (RIMM) BlackBerry about gaining access to their employees' communications, according to a published media report.
The discussions were disclosed by India's Home Secretary, G.K. Pillai, according to the report, published Sunday on
The Wall Street Journal's
Web site.
Pillai also dismissed reports that India would block BlackBerry services if its security demands weren't met by the end of January, the report added.

"We're trying to find solutions where everybody's interests are in one sense protected," Mr. Pillai was quoted saying in the report. "It's going to take a little time, because it's a new technology."
Research In Motion operates secure networks for its BlackBerry smartphones and heavily encrypts emails on those networks. The Indian government has asked for access to the data out of concern that terrorists would use BlackBerry devices to communicate.
RIMM shares closed Friday down 4 cents at $62.65.
