is going Dutch.
The online auction giant has acquired Marktplaats.nl, a Netherlands-based online classifieds site for 225 million euros, or about $290 million, in an all-cash deal, the company announced on Thursday. eBay, which already runs an auction site in the Netherlands, will operate the classifieds site as a separate business.
The acquisition shouldn't materially affect eBay's earnings or revenue for 2004 or 2005, the company said.
The deal marks eBay's latest foray into the world of classified ads. Earlier this year, the company bought a 25% stake in U.S. classified site Craigslist and acquired all of Mobile.de, a German-based online site for automobile listings.
Marktplaats.nl is the most popular Dutch classifieds site, with more than a million listings, according to a statement from the companies. eBay acquired the site from Het Goed Beheer B.V.
In recent trading, eBay's stock was up 65 cents, or 0.6%, to $104.49.
