Dobson Leaps as it Considers Strategic Options

Wireless telephone services provider Dobson Communications (DCEL) was up 16.4% in preopen Instinet trading after the company late Thursday said it retained Banc of America Securities and Lehman Brothers to help evaluate its strategic options with regard to a possible merger, acquisition, restructuring or alliance.

The company said that the U.S. wireless industry is poised for another round of consolidation, and that "it is prudent to explore all of the company's strategic options."

Dobson holds a 50% stake in

American Cellular

, and with that company, services 1.3 million subscribers in rural areas.
