Dell to Lay Off Unspecified Number of Workers

Dell says worldwide reductions include staff cuts at its plant in Forsyth County, N.C.

Texas computer firm Dell announced Wednesday it would cut more jobs, according to media reports.

The company, based in Round Rock, Texas, did not specify how many people would lose their jobs, but it did confirm that some layoffs would occur at its plant in Forsyth County, N.C., according to

cost-cutting measures

to cope with a harsh economy that's since become even less tolerable. As of Jan. 30, Dell indicated it had trimmed its staff by 9,300.

The company's shares eked out a 2.5% gain Wednesday, closing the trading session at $8.98, slightly above their 52-week low of $7.84 but considerably off their high for the same period of $26.04 -- and wildly off the $50-plus prices in 2000.The stock's troubles have prompted some to suggest Dell might need to
