Complaint filed against former Bank of Israel Governor Jacob Frenkel
The 52th State Comptroller report was submitted by retired justice Eliezer Goldberg on Monday to President Moshe Katsav and Knesset Chairman Avraham Burg.
Goldberg focused on several subjects, including the wage costs of former Bank of Israel Governor Jacob Frenkel.
The report says that Frenkel demanded sums estimated at hundreds of thousand of shekels, money for which he was allegedly inelegible. The report says the former governor received most of the money with the help of subordinates, mainly former senior director Oded Hezroni.
The report drew harsh criticism of Frenkel. In light of the report's findings, Constitution, Law and Justice Committee Chairman MK Ophir Pines-Paz of the Labor Party filed a complaint with the police against Frenkel. Pines-Paz said that Frenkel has a great deal of in his favor, but no one is above the law. Opposition leader MK Yossi Sarid called on the Israel Prize committee to reconsider this year's economics award, which went to Frenkel.
It is possible that some of the findings of the report will be passed to Attorney General Elyakim Rubinstein in order to examine the possibility of opening a criminal investigation against Frenkel.
