is recalling about 55,000 battery packs used in Armada E500 and V300 notebooks.

After identifying a defect in one battery pack that was made between June 2 and July 10, Compaq issued a worldwide recall, fearing that the flawed battery packs may short circuit, which could cause them to overheat, release smoke and possibly catch fire.

The battery packs were distributed worldwide in notebooks, as separate options and as replacement spares.
