chugged higher on Thursday after the security firm topped profit and revenue expectations for the third quarter.

The stock recently tacked on 3.9%, or 77 cents, to $20.77.

Check Point earned $71.1 million, or 31 cents a share, compared with $78.7 million, or 31 cents a share, in the year-ago quarter.

Excluding some items, the company made $78.6 million, or 34 cents a share, falling from $80.5 million, or 32 cents a share, in the same period a year ago. On that basis, Check Point passed the average analyst forecast of 32 cents a share.

On the top line, the Israeli firewall company reported $142.5 million, rising from $141.1 million in the same quarter last year and solidly beating the consensus of $138.8 million.

During the quarter, the company bought back 11.5 million shares for $201.4 million.

According to media reports, Check Point said its net income for the fourth quarter will range from 34 cents a share to 37 cents a share. Without some items, EPS would be 37 cents to 41 cents. Revenue will be between $153 million and $166 million, the company said.

For the final quarter of the year, Thomson First Call analysts are predicting an EPS of 38 cents on sales of $158.1 million.

"During the third quarter, we delivered solid financial performance," Gil Shwed, chairman and CEO of the company, said in a statement. "These results were driven by strong adoption of our new UTM offerings, successful implementation of enhanced service initiatives and continued execution from our partners and employees."
