The shareholders of cellular provider Cellcom have offered Uri Shani the position of CEO in place of outgoing Jacob Perry Ma'ariv reports.

Shani has resigned as bureau chief of the office of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

Shani was approved by Cellcom Chairman Shlomo Piotrkowsky, representative of the Safra family on the Cellcom board. Piotrkowsky has in recent months considered several candidates, among them Super-Sol (NYSE:SAE) CEO Amiaz Sagis, and Yoram Turbovicz, former CEO of Discount Investments.

Cellcom estimates that Shani's close relationship with the ruling party will assist him in advancing regulatory matters relating to Cellcom's activity.
