rose 16% last week after regulators approved the company's request to offer long-distance service in Georgia and Louisiana. BellSouth, one of the regional bells, operates in the Southeast. The company, which currently offers local phone services, also said it was on track to meet its 2002 growth targets. BellSouth ended the week by saying it would cut 4,000 to 5,000 jobs.
