BEA Systems (BEAS) was up 3.1% in preopen Island trading.

After the close Tuesday, the e-commerce software company posted first-quarter earnings of 8 cents per share, ahead of the Street's consensus of 7 cents and the year-ago 3 cents.

BEA raised its EPS estimates for 2002 by 2 cents, to between 41 and 43 cents, on stronger than expected sales in the first quarter.
