SAN FRANCISCO -- Compaq (CPQ) grabbed the broad brush when it addressed the question of PC demand Wednesday.
In a presentation here at the
Banc of America Securities Investment Conference
, CEO Michael Capellas characterized demand as "both soft and strong." Capellas explained that there's a spending shift away from traditional segments like commercial desktop PCs toward Internet-related devices. Demand for Web servers is very strong, and it's "exploding" for wireless devices, enthused Capellas.
Compaq's presentation came one day after
Dell called PC demand strong in the short and long term. And Dell said it expects 18% growth in PC sales in its fiscal third quarter, which ends in October. How's that for specifics?
