named Patricia F. Russo the new chairman and appointed President and Chief Executive Donald K. Peterson to the additional post of vice chairman.

Russo, 47 years old, will succeed Henry Schacht, who resigned as chairman in October to become the chairman and chief executive of

Lucent

( LU), Avaya's former parent company. Schacht is still on Avaya's board. Russo served as the president of the Lucent businesses that currently form the core of Avaya from 1993 to 1997. The Basking Ridge, N.J., communication systems company was spun off from Lucent earlier this year.

Most recently, Russo was executive vice president and CEO of Lucent's service provider networks group.

Shares of Avaya were unchanged at $12.69 in recent
