in Japan Thursday and the devices were in short supply soon after they went on sale, reports say.

The global launch Thursday of the iPhone 4 was being carried out at 7 a.m. local time in each region, so Japanese were among the first in the world to get their hands on the device, the

Associated Press

reports. The U.S., France, U.K. and Germany also are taking part in the global launch.

Some customers in Japan waited in line for three days to buy the new iPhone, according to other reports.

In Japan, the iPhone 4 costs 57,600 yen ($635) for the 32 gigabyte model and 46,080 yen for the 16 gigabyte version, the

reports.
