NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Apple (AAPL) - Get Report is still largely an iPhone-centric company, having generated nearly 70% of revenue in its most recent quarter from the iconic smartphone, as it sold 61.2 million iPhones in the most recent quarter.
This quarter, however, there will be lots of attention focused on the Apple Watch, despite Apple not giving official sales results for the new product.
A slew of recent third-party data has not painted too bright of a picture of Apple Watch sales. One of the most stark is research from Slice Intelligence, which noted Fitbit (FIT) - Get Report devices outsold the Apple Watch in May, selling 850,000 devices, compared to 777,000 Apple Watches sold. There are multiple Fitbit devices--seven in total--compared to just one Apple Watch (albeit in three versions).
Interestingly enough, Apple Senior Vice President of Marketing Phil Schiller recently tweeted an article that did not mention Apple Watch sales, but rather customer satisfaction.
Sell-side analysts have been tweaking their Apple Watch sales estimates in recent weeks as they try to get a handle on just how well the device is selling. Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Brian White recently upped his forecast for the quarter, moving to 2.97 million units, up from 2.83 million.
Apple, which reports third-quarter results on July 21 after the close of trading, has refused to publicly disclose exactly how sales are going, making a judgment of the Watch's success more complicated. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expect the Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple to earn $1.80 a share on $49.3 billion in revenue for its fiscal third quarter.
TheStreet will be live-blogging the earnings, starting at 3:45 p.m.
