The newly combined

AOL Time Warner

(AOL)

will slash 2,000 to 2,500 jobs, according to a report by

MSNBC.com.

Citing unnamed sources, the Web site reported that the media colossus will cut up to 3% of its 85,000 workers -- cuts that come on top of 400 already announced at

CNN

.

AOL has a pattern of downsizing after mergers, including laying off 850 of its 12,000 workers after it acquired

Netscape

in the spring of 1999. It's promised Wall Street $1 billion in savings from this merger.

AOL merged with Time Warner in a $106 billion deal that met government approval earlier this month.
