AOL Names Head of Email Operations
NEW YORK (
) --
AOL
has tapped Brad Garlinghouse to lead the company's efforts to expand the use of its email and instant messaging offerings.
AOL, which is being spun off from
Time Warner
(TWX)
, also said Garlinghouse will serve as the company's West Coast lead for AOL Ventures, the company's venture capital arm. He will be based at AOL's offices in Mountain View, Calif., where the company's email operations are based.
Garlinghouse most recently served as in-house senior adviser at Silver Lake Partners. But he's probably best known for his days at
Yahoo!
(YHOO)
when he called attention to Yahoo!'s problems in an internal memo referred to as the "peanut butter manifesto," arguing the company has spread itself too thin. He spent almost six years at Yahoo!, leaving as a senior vice president in which he was in charge of the company's communications and community products.
"Brad Garlinghouse is an all-star in the Internet industry with an unparalleled background and proven track record, having led Yahoo!'s communications products to unprecedented growth," said AOL Chairman and CEO Tim Armstrong, in a statement Tuesday.
