Amazon.com ( AMZN) has picked Microsoft ( MSFT) as the search-technology provider for its A9 and Alexa engines, dropping Google ( GOOG). The change to Microsoft's Windows Live search was done over the weekend, according to Dow Jones Newswires, which reported the deal earlier today. A Google spokesperson couldn't immediately be reached for comment. Winning Amazon's business is one of the rare bright spots for Microsoft's Web business, which has languished behind Google and Yahoo! ( YHOO). The company reported disappointing earnings last week and gave soft guidance because of additional spending to become more competitive with the Web giants. Amazon is the latest company to bristle at Google's dominance. eBay ( EBAY), a major search advertiser, reportedly is talking with Microsoft and Yahoo! ( YAHOO) about joining forces to fight Google, according to the Wall Street Journal. Expect more battles among the engines as competition for search advertising dollars continues to heat up. Forrester Research estimates that U.S. search-engine marketing spending will hit $11.7 billion by 2010, a gain of 170% from 2004, while the market in Europe will rise 250% to about $3.6 billion. Google gained market share in March at the expense of both Yahoo! and MSN, according to market researcher comScore Networks. Shares of Microsoft rose 14 cents to $24.30. Amazon dropped 12 cents to $34.47 while Google declined $1.40 to $397.50.
