Ajit Pai, the Chairman of the FCC, urged Apple (AAPL) on Thursday to activate FM radio chips installed in the tech titan's iPhones to cope with the aftermath of devastating hurricanes, Reuters reports.

Pai stated that Apple is one of the primary phone manufacturers which has refused to do so. He explained that when wireless networks go down in the midst of a natural disaster, smartphones with installed FM chips can give Americans access to life-saving information.

"It is time for Apple to step up to the plate and put the safety of the American people first," Pai said.

Shares of Apple fell 0.62% Thursday.
