Hulu LLC's The Handmaid's Tale won the top prize at Sunday's Emmy's indicating a turning point for streaming services.
The Handmaid's Tale, the adaptation of Margaret Atwood's classic dystopian novel, took home five awards at the ceremony in Los Angeles, including Best Drama Series, Best Actress in a Dramatic series for Elisabeth Moss and Best Supporting Actress for Ann Dowd.
Hulu's win for best dramatic series marks the first time a show produced by a streaming service has won the evening's most coveted prize.
Netflix (NFLX) took home the award for outstanding supporting actor in a drama series for John Lithgow's portrayal of Winston Churchill in The Crown. The streaming service also won the Emmy for best writing in a comedy series, with Aziz Ansari and Lena Waithe picking up the statue for Master of None.
Netflix also picked up the award for writing for a limited series, movie or drama with Charlie Brooker taking home the statue for Black Mirror: San Junipero.
HBO's Big Little Lies took five prizes in the limited series categories, including wins for Nicole Kidman and Laura Dern.
Political satire was also center stage Sunday evening with Saturday Night Live taking home eight televised awards for cast members Alec Baldwin and Kate McKinnon for their portrayals President Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. The show also picked up the best variety sketch show award and nods for guest appearances from Melissa McCarthy and Dave Chappelle.
British comedian John Oliver and his writing team scooped two prizes for satirical show Last Week Tonight.
Veep won the award for best comedy series while Julia Louis-Dreyfus picked up the outstanding lead actress in a comedy for the show.
Politics was at the forefront at the ceremony with host Stephen Colbert and many winners making political references on stage.
"At long last, Mr President, here is your Emmy," said Alec Baldwin as he collected his prize for supporting actor in a comedy series. Trump has expressed frustration that he has never won an Emmy for The Apprentice.
