Home Depot Inc. (HD) announced that it is turning the rooftops of 50 of its stores into solar farms through a partnership with General Electric Co. (GE) and Tesla Inc. (TSLA) .

The company said the project would reduce Home Depot's reliance on the national electric grid by between 30% and 35% per store annually, the equivalent of enough energy to power over 2,000 American homes.

The average Home Depot rooftop is over 100,000 square feet and can accommodate about 1,000 solar panels.

Home Depot shares were down 0.4% to $151.63 Thursday.
