Walmart Stores Inc. (WMT) really wants to get to know its customers, according to a recent patent filing uncovered by The Wall Street Journal.

The company filed a patent for video technology that will be able to track customers' facial expressions as they shop in the store, potentially allowing employees to address customer needs before they even have to ask.

"Often, if customer service is inadequate, this fact will not appear in data available to management until many customers have been lost. With so much competition, a customer will often simply go elsewhere rather than take the time to make a complaint," the patent filing stated.
