Beyond Meat Vegan Alternative Secures Distribution Deal With Grocer Safeway

Microsoft  (MSFT) founder Bill Gates backed vegan meat alternative food maker Beyond Meat has signed a distribution deal with grocer Safeway (SWY) , the company announced Thursday. 

Beyond Meat, which also counts Tyson Food  (TSN) and General Mills  (GIS) as backers, will be sold in 280 Safeway stores in California, Nevada and Hawaii. Beyond Meat burgers are already available at Whole Foods  (WFM) and about 30 restaurants in California. 

The company, which was founded in California in 2009, originally focused on a frozen chicken substitute, but has found success with its Beyond Burger ground beef alternative.
