Dish gained 2% to $63.48 on the news, which Satellite Business News reported. Amazon dropped 1% to $955.67 on Wednesday.
Dish Chairman Charlie Ergen has acquired wireless spectrum over a number of years. Dish has not finalized a plan, which could include deploying a network or selling the spectrum to a telecom. Ergen has recently discussed building out a 5G service based on the next generation of wireless technology, which would have high capacity and could connect cars, machines and other devices to the Internet.
In such a partnership, Dish would bring spectrum, T-Mobile USA could build it out and Amazon would bring scale, cash and commercial applications ranging from drone communications to use with its Echo personal assistant. "Amazon could use the capacity not only for in-home services such as Echo, but also to support other activities such as drone deliveries, while DISH could provide wireless service built around [online video offering] Sling TV, as well as fixed wireless broadband if desired," Farrar blogged.
