Japan Said to Prefer Aegis Ashore Missile Defense System Over THAAD

Japan is nearing the decision to select the Aegis Ashore missile defense system over another system called the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), Reuters reports.

Security and aerospace firm Lockheed Martin (LMT) makes both.

Japan has actively been looking into introducing a new missile defense system, as North Korea intensifies its missile and nuclear development.

"It is indeed very clear that the threat posed by North Korea's missile and nuclear program is now entering into a new stage. That is our recognition," Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told CNBC today.
