Microsoft (MSFT - Get Report)  said today that it has received a subpoena from the FBI, demanding it turn over personal information on a customer, the company confirmed in a blog post.

Microsoft said it was given a "national security letter" filed in 2014, but came with a gag order barring the company or anyone else from unveiling the contents.

The subpoena doesn't ask a judge or a court to permit the turning over of the customer's data.
