It was literally only the last trading day that we were talking Dow 20K as an imminent though arbitrary milestone we'd all be celebrating (or fearing) like Y2K. Remember that? Me neither or, rather, barely.
Well, last Friday we came within less than a point of what now looks like a barrier, and now we're already onto other news. Thank you oil majors for dragging us down.
There were also a flurry of mergers and other transactions on the first Monday of the trading year. From McDonald's (MCD - Get Report) hiving off its China business to a group led by Carlyle (CG - Get Report) for $2.1 billion, and Ariad (ARIA) selling for $5.2 billion to Japan's Takeda, to Mars Inc.'s $9.1 billion deal for veterinary operator VCA (WOOF) , the first merger Monday of the year did not disappoint. But what should you realistically expect for the rest of 2017 in terms of dealmaking? TheStreet's sister publication, TheDeal, has the answer.
And even still, as the merger announcements were flying, our Tweeter-in-Chief was also hard at work trying to steal headlines. What was Donald Trump's meeting with the CEO of China's largest e-commerce company Alibaba (BABA - Get Report) really about? TheStreet is here to help you decipher the implications.
What about Trump's latest appointments? We've got that covered, too, don't worry. What about happenings from the Detroit auto show? Or highlights from J.P. Morgan's (JPM - Get Report) health care conference in San Francisco? We've got reporters on the ground to help keep you abreast of the latest happenings in one of the most volatile sectors since the election, including the latest round of ACA repeal speculation.
So while the markets tried to keep up with Trump, rampant consolidation in a host of industries and fluctuation in oil prices that depressed the majors, TheStreet and its affiliates were here to help you cut through the noise. The highlights from Monday, also the 10th anniversary of Apple's (AAPL - Get Report) 2007 iPhone reveal, can be found in the full version of "In Case You Missed It."
