TUCSON, Ariz., Nov. 29, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The United Steelworkers (USW) today said that on Thursday, Dec. 1, workers from Asarco's copper mines and processing facilities represented by eight international labor unions will rally at the company's corporate headquarters to mark the anniversary of management's unlawful implementation of a contract proposal in the absence of impasse.
Although their previous labor agreement originally expired on June 30, 2013, more than 2,000 hourly production and maintenance employees at the Grupo Mexico subsidiary's five U.S. locations worked under its terms and conditions while negotiations proceeded. The company unilaterally implemented its so-called "last, best and final" contract proposal on December 1, 2015, rather than resolving the outstanding issues in good faith at the bargaining table as the unions requested. Representatives from Los Mineros, the union that represents Grupo Mexico workers in Mexico, will also participate in the rally as a show of international solidarity. Region 28 of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) is currently prosecuting Asarco for unilaterally changing working conditions at the facilities on multiple occasions without first negotiating over the changes with union representatives as required by law. The USW represents 850,000 men and women employed in metals, mining, pulp and paper, rubber, chemicals, glass, auto supply and the energy-producing industries, along with a growing number of workers in public sector and service occupations.ATTN ASSIGNMENT/EDITORS: Photo Opportunities, InterviewsWHO: Elected union leaders, workers from Asarco's five U.S. locations and representatives from Los Mineros, the union that represents Grupo Mexico workers in MexicoWHAT: Rally to mark the anniversary of Asarco management illegally implementing the company's "last, best and final" contract proposal WHEN: 12:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 1, 2016WHERE: Asarco corporate office - 5285 E.
