PITTSBURGH, Nov. 11, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Cognition Therapeutics, Inc., a clinical stage neuroscience company focused on the development of innovative therapeutics for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease and other neurocognitive disorders, announced today that the first Alzheimer's patient has been dosed in a Phase 1b clinical trial of CT1812 in mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease.
CT1812 is a first-in-class, orally available, small molecule that displaces bound Aß oligomers and inhibits binding of Aß oligomers to the receptor complex. By targeting and displacing these toxic beta amyloid oligomers, CT1812 has been shown in disease models of Alzheimer's disease to stop and reverse memory loss. In Phase 1a clinical studies, CT1812 was found to be safe when administered at multiple dose levels using a once daily oral dosing schedule for up to two weeks. The newly initiated Phase 1b clinical trial will study CT1812 dosed daily for 28 days in individuals with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. Patients will be randomized to one of two doses of CT1812 (280mg or 560mg) or placebo. The Phase 1b study is designed to help evaluate the safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetic profile of CT1812. It will also help establish the recommended dose of CT1812 for a larger Phase 2 study in patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. Data from this Phase 1b study are expected in mid-2017.
