CHICAGO, Nov. 10, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Concordia University Chicago, in partnership with Emerge Education, is announcing the launch of a fully-online master of arts degree in Women's and Gender Studies (WGS). The program is the latest addition to Concordia- Chicago's extensive list of graduate programs. The new WGS program will enroll its first cohort in January 2017.
Concordia- Chicago's master's degree in Women's and Gender Studies will attract academics, educators, health care professionals, social service practitioners, activists, human rights workers, and law enforcement professionals who are concerned with issues of identity, equity, and citizenship both locally and globally. The program will harness students' academic curiosity as they explore the dynamics of collective and individual identity. The expertise and insight gained through program completion will enhance graduates' effectiveness and impact as civically engaged, ethical leaders. "Concordia- Chicago's Women's and Gender Studies master's program does more than familiarize students with current research on and theory in women's and gender studies," says Michelle Morkert, PhD, associate professor and WGS program coordinator. "Our innovative and interdisciplinary approach develops critical thinking and leadership skills even as it develops a broad knowledge base in global human rights perspectives with an emphasis on gender." Students enrolled in this 20-month degree will participate in the Seminar in Critical Praxis, a capstone experience that offers critical reflection on one's own beliefs and assumptions as they relate to one's vocational and personal practices. A graduate certificate will also be available in Women's and Gender Studies, allowing students to specialize in gender while pursuing graduate degrees in other fields. Students may also earn a graduate certificate of specialization instead of a master's degree, thereby improving their marketability and preparation for the workplace. The certificate program encompasses four courses (12 credit hours) from the WGS master of arts program.
